What is the Best Way to Get Around the Amalfi Coast?
The roads on the Amalfi Coast can be challenging, especially in the summer when traffic is heavy. Navigating the narrow, winding roads requires skill and experience, making it more complicated than it might appear on Google Maps. With the region’s vertical towns and busy streets, it’s essential to choose the best mode of transportation to ensure a smooth and enjoyable holiday.
There are several ways to get around, including walking, hiring a car or scooter, using local buses and ferries, or our personal recommendation—private drivers and transfers. Below, we provide some local insights into the pros and cons of each option.
Hire Car
Hiring a car gives you the freedom to explore the coast at your own pace. However, parking is scarce, and maneuvering through tight spaces can be challenging. Many roads have blind corners not designed for two-way traffic, leading to frequent beeping and reversing to let other cars or buses pass. Additionally, few accommodations offer parking. If you do decide to hire a car—which we don’t typically recommend—make sure to take our extra insurance for peace of mind.
Scooter Hire
Scooters are a common sight on the Amalfi Coast, used by locals to zip through traffic. While they offer a convenient way to navigate the roads, they require confidence and experience, especially on the winding coastal routes. Unfortunately, many scooter accidents involve tourists unfamiliar with the terrain. We recommend this option only if you’re a highly skilled and experienced rider.

Local Buses
Local buses are a convenient way to travel between towns, especially if you prefer to avoid steep stairs at the end of a long day. However, keep in mind that this is Italy, and buses may not always run on time. They can also be full, causing them to pass by without stopping. If you plan to use local buses, allow plenty of time, especially when heading to pre-booked experiences or excursions.
Ferries
Ferries are an excellent way to enjoy day trips along the Amalfi Coast, offering stunning views and a relaxed travel experience. While they are economical, we don’t recommend them for arriving or departing with luggage, as you’ll need to organize a porter or taxi upon arrival at the dock. Private transfers are often more efficient, taking you directly to your accommodation or the nearest accessible road.

Private Drivers & Transfers
Using private drivers and transfers makes traveling on the Amalfi Coast effortless. With a bit of preplanning, you can have a driver and vehicle ready to take you and your group around the coast, to your experiences, and back again, as well as to and from the airport. In the heat of summer, there’s nothing better than traveling in air-conditioned comfort with a local driver who knows the roads and ensures your safety. Most drivers are fluent in English, well-dressed, punctual, and offer valuable local tips. Fun fact: Many private drivers on the Amalfi Coast use prestige vehicles like Mercedes Benz, ensuring your journey is both comfortable and stylish.
