Secret Paths & Farm-to-Table Flavours in Amalfi’s Valle delle Ferriere
Walk from the quiet hilltop village of Scala down to the haunting ruins of a 12th-century basilica, open to the sky and looking out over Ravello, Amalfi and the sea. From there, follow ancient paths through lemon terraces into the lush, waterfall-fed Valle delle Ferriere, where mossy stones and old mill ruins hint at Amalfi’s powerful past. At a tiny organic farm tucked in the valley, you sit down to a simple, generous lunch of lemon pastas, hand-rolled gnocchi and garden vegetables. The day finishes in Amalfi’s historic paper mill, where you learn to make your own sheet of paper using centuries-old techniques.

You leave the coast behind and head into the quiet hills above Amalfi, discovering a side of the region most travellers never see. With your local guide and driver, you arrive in the sleepy village of Scala where ancient stone paths wind between old houses and terraced gardens. From here, your guide leads you down to the ruins of the 12th-century Basilica of Sant’Eustachio.
Perched high on the hillside, the basilica feels both grand and forgotten – arches open to the sky, crumbling walls, and sweeping views over Ravello, Amalfi, and the sea, while your guide shares stories of Amalfi’s medieval past.
You then follow narrow paths through terraced lemon groves and pine-scented slopes, beginning your descent into the Valle delle Ferriere – the Valley of the Mills. The landscape softens into a lush, almost tropical gorge of ferns, mossy rocks, and shaded paths that trace a clear mountain stream. Along the way, you pass waterfalls and the evocative remains of old ironworks and paper mills, once the engines of Amalfi’s power.
At the heart of the valley, you reach a working organic farm run by three generations of the same family. Mamma Mena and her daughter Silvia welcome you for a farm-to-table lunch – lemon-scented pasta, hand-rolled gnocchi, garden vegetables, house-made preserves – simple, honest dishes bursting with flavour.
After lunch, you continue into Amalfi town to visit the historic paper museum. Together with your guide, you step inside an original mill, learn how the town’s famous paper is made, and even create your own sheet using centuries-old techniques.
Later in the afternoon, your driver returns you to Positano. You arrive back to your accommodation with the scent of lemons and the sound of waterfalls still in your mind, feeling as though you’ve walked through the hidden heart of the Amalfi Coast.
